Cigars for Soldiers
Ybor City is home to some of the world’s finest cigars, and nearly a dozen of the area’s local cigar merchants are stepping up to supply this cultural and social staple to the hard-working troops. Ybor City cigar merchants, visitors and event vendors collaborate to show U.S. troops just how much Tampa’s historic district supports all they do for the country.
In 2010, the Ybor City Development Corporation launched the first Ybor City Cigar for Soldiers Program and partnered with the Ybor City Museum Society's 12th Annual Heritage and Cigar Festival to collect cigars to send to soldiers overseas. In December 2010, Ybor City proudly sent nearly 2,000 cigars overseas along with a signed banner from the donors.
The program continued in 2011 with the collection of cigars taking place throughout the year with a concerted effort on November 19th, 2011 during the 13th Annual Ybor City Heritage and Cigar Festival in Centennial Park. More than 2,000 cigars were collected in 2011, and will be packaged to be sent to the troops on January 17, 2012.
